What people ask us.

Ice dam leaking into the house? What to do tonight.

Catch the water inside, move what you can out of the way, and stay off the icy roof. The ice dam itself comes from heat escaping into the attic, so the lasting fix is in the attic and at the eaves, not in chipping ice.

Does homeowners insurance cover ice dam leaks in Ohio?

Often, yes, for the water damage. The Ohio Department of Insurance says damage from heavy snow and ice is generally covered after your deductible, and the Insurance Information Institute says that includes ice in the gutters backing water up under the shingles. Damage from poor maintenance is not covered, and every policy is different.

How long does a roof last in Ohio?

About 20 to 30 years for an asphalt shingle roof. A 2007 National Association of Home Builders study put asphalt shingles at about 20 years, and InterNACHI lists architectural shingles at 30 and 3-tab at 20. How the attic is vented matters as much as the calendar.
